Toddler Birthday Party Game Ideas
Toddler birthday parties are fun. As long as you plan what you're going to do, and don't over do anything. Set your expectations at realistic limits and your child and guests will have a great time.
What kind of Birthday Party Games can you play with a group of toddlers and preschoolers? Really, there's alot of fun and simple games that you can do with this age group and still maintain a stress-free party. Remember to focus on the fun, and not on competition. Also, keep it short, because the attention span of a toddler allows a very small window of opportunity for organized game playing.
Toddlers will most likely be accompanied by a parent. If you have not requested that important point, make sure to tell the parents that at least one parent must remain per child. For this reason, limit your number of guests to 3-4, or another rule of thumb often applied is 1 guest for each year of your child's age...i.e. a 3 year old will invite 3 kids. I'm a licensed child care provider, and had my 3 year old son's party here, during our afternoon snack time, so I had 6 kids with 1 helper, my husband. It can be done effectively, but if you're not used to a large group of toddlers and preschoolers, then get help or have a small party.
One really cute Toddler Birthday Party Game Idea that worked well with my son's 3rd birthday party was a rendition of 'pin the tail', but with a big posterboard size Elmo Head, and changed to 'Pin the Nose on Elmo.' His theme this year was Elmo (again, because he is an addict,) and so I carried the Elmo theme into the games, spending very little money for supplies. The kids can either be blindfolded or not, depending on the anxiety of the child. They had a hoot!
Why not take a small stuffed toy, in my case, a Stuffed Elmo, and play 'hot potato', but change the game to 'Hot Elmo.' The same rules apply as in traditional hot potato, play some music, an Elmo song, or the theme song from your child's selected party theme, and when the music stops whoever is holding the toy gets to sit at a 'special spot.' Have some kind of party favor waiting at the 'special spot' so the kids receive their prize then. Remember, focus on completing the game rather than winning. Everyone gets a prize.
